TinkerTool is a freeware application for macOS that allows the user to customise the system by exposing hidden preferences to a graphical user interface (GUI).[1] It is developed by German developer Marcel Bresink Software-Systeme. Its latest release is version 7.4.2, which is optimised for macOS Catalina and many features that came with it.[2]

Features[edit]

For macOS 10.14 Mojave and macOS 10.15 Catalina, use TinkerTool. The program with the standard name TinkerTool is always designed to be compatible with the latest official versions of Apple's operating systems. For macOS 10.12 Sierra and macOS 10.13 High Sierra, use TinkerTool 6. Mar 30, 2019  TinkerTool System ($14) has a section that includes the ability to set up inheritance on shares in 10.14 Mojave. Oct 18, 2019  Overview TinkerTool is an application that gives you access to additional preference settings Apple has built into Mac OS X. This allows to activate hidden features in the operating system and in some of the applications delivered with the system. The tool makes sure that preference changes can only affect the current user. Tweaking tools are easy to find for Windows, but there tend to be fewer available for OS X. TinkerTool is a system customisation tool which enables you to tinker with hidden settings to help. OnyX is a multifunction utility that you can use to verify the structure of the system files, to run miscellaneous maintenance and cleaning tasks, to configure parameters in the Finder, Dock, Safari, and some Apple applications, to delete caches, to remove certain problematic folders and files, to rebuild various databases and indexes, and more. Mar 27, 2019  have read through multiple questions on the topic of ACL inheritance on Mac OS X, but unfortunately, none seem to be effective in solving this issue in Mojave. They do seem to work on High Sierra, and I have a machine sharing files which is running High Sierra. However, I am now configuring a new Mac Mini Server, which ships with Mojave.

TinkerTool gives users access to hidden system and application preferences that Apple has built into macOS, but not integrated into GUI preferences menus. Although users can typically access these through Terminal operations, TinkerTool assembles them and provides a GUI similar to Apple’s System Preferences application for easier access.

By using Apple’s hidden preferences, the application only commits changes that are reversible and affect the preferences of the current user account. Administrative privileges or background processing are not required. The application also supports a reset option to reset all preferences to Apple's defaults, or to the state that existed before using the application.

Tinkertool For Mojave

History[edit]

Initially, TinkerTool worked with all versions of macOS. However, over the years, compatibility with particular versions of macOS was spun off into separate applications: TinkerTool Classic, TinkerTool Classic Generation 2, TinkerTool 4, TinkerTool 5, TinkerTool 6, and the current TinkerTool. Support therefore goes back to Mac OS X 10.1 Puma and later.[3]

Versions[edit]

TinkerTool versions are specific to versions of macOS and are not backward compatible. The program will not work correctly if used with an OS for which it was not designed.

  • Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar: TinkerTool Classic, v3.9.5
  • Mac OS X 10.3 Panther: TinkerTool Classic, v3.9.5
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: TinkerTool Classic Generation 2, v4.5
  • Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard: TinkerTool Classic Generation 2, v4.5
  • Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard: TinkerTool 4, v4.97
  • Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: TinkerTool 4, v4.97
  • OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion: TinkerTool 4, v4.97
  • OS X 10.9 Mavericks: TinkerTool 5, v5.7
  • OS X 10.10 Yosemite: TinkerTool 5, v5.7
  • OS X 10.11 El Capitan: TinkerTool 5, v5.7

Dev c++ portable free download. The macOS Catalina (10.15) build is actively maintained. However, all previous versions in support of past operating systems are still available for download from the developer's website

TinkerTool System 6.86

TinkerTool System 6 is a collection of system utility features helping you in performing advanced administration tasks on Apple Macintosh computers. The application makes use of a self-adapting user interface which automatically adjusts to the computer model and to the version of macOS you are running. All options available in the current situation are accessible via “panes”, very similar to the techniques you already know from the System Preferences application. The features are controlled via a single window which allows you to use the application as a general toolbox and First Aid assistant.
This includes:

Tinkertool Mojave Mesa

  • built-in maintenance features of macOS, usually not visible on the graphical user interface,
  • extended file operations, not available in the macOS Finder,
  • the possibility to access advanced system settings which are not visible in System Preferences,
  • genuine and unique features of TinkerTool System, designed to resolve typical real-world problems of administrators and to fix the effects of certain defects ('bugs') in the operating system,
  • an emergency tool to troubleshoot and repair macOS in cases where the graphical user interface is no longer starting correctly or the user account of the system administrator has been damaged,
  • functions to collect advanced information about the hardware, operating system, and applications.

Tinkertool Mojave Beach

Together with its sister program TinkerTool which is available at no charge, TinkerTool System is a perfect substitute for the following types of system utilities:
  • Finder enhancers,
  • Cache and font cache cleaners,
  • Scripts to create bootable system installer and recovery disks,
  • Tools to access hidden preference settings,
  • Applications to make objects invisible in the Finder,
  • Log file browsers,
  • Application uninstallers,
  • Single User Mode troubleshooting tools,
  • Spell-checker dictionary editors,
  • and many others.

What's New:

Tinkertool Mojave Valley

Version 6.86 (Build 200323)
  • Added support for macOS Catalina 10.15.4 and later. Note that previous versions of TinkerTool System are not compatible with this operating system version.
  • Added a separate, fully resizable APFS overview window. This is helpful when performing complex APFS operations affecting multiple partitions or disks.
  • Added percentage values to the Storage Space overview feature.
  • Added new workarounds for continuing defects in macOS that can cause the system to lose preference and Resume settings when the user logs out too fast. The dialogs that indicate that the user must be logged out to continue a pending maintenance operation have been redesigned.
