The JD-850 library is based on a collection of multi-samples captured from the JD-800 hardware synthesizer by Roland. This unique digital synthesizer was one of Roland’s flagship products in the early 90’s. It stood out from the crowd by offering a simple workflow similar to old vintage analogue synthesizers. Almost all parameters could be tweaked directly from the front panel.

I was a bit disappointed to see that the freebie pack contains only 3 patches from the full product. On the bright side, the GUI panel is fully functional. This means that you can modify the provided sounds using the on-screen parameters and turn them into something completely different. I was able to get some very nice sounding 80s pads and strings from this instrument, so the free version of JD-850 is definitely worth the download if you’re looking for this type of sounds.
